Caving in of Jhelum embankment at Lasjan

SRINAGAR, FEBRUARY 01 (KNO) : Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Dr Syed Abid Rasheed Shah, today conducted proceedings of ongoing investigations into the caving in of the Jhelum embankment at Lasjan here. During the proceedings, the officers of the Irrigation & Flood Control Department put forth their point of view in respect to the caving in of the embankment and submitted details of the entire episode and damages to the embankment. The DC, who is the Inquiry Officer in the matter, decided that a joint team of officers from I&FC, Geology & Mining, PHE, R&B and Revenue departments will conduct an inspection of the spot in order to ascertain the reasons behind the caving in of the embankment. The inspection team will be headed by the DC himself. On the occasion, the DC instructed the concerned for ensuring adherence in letter and spirit to High Court orders passed in the matter restricting heavy vehicular movement on the embankments of River Jhelum. SSP Traffic and district police were asked to ensure strict implementation of the order. The DC said that any stakeholder who might wish to share information about the incident can do so at email srinagar@nic.in. Later, the DC convened two separate meetings with the representatives of Reach Dredging Ltd and Flood Spill Channel Division Narbal, reviewing the status of ongoing dredging in river Jhelum and excavation from the flood spill channel from Padshahi Bagh to Hokersar in the district. Dr. Shah instructed for submission of detailed reports of the entire dredging process along with factual details and the excavation of the flood spill channel.(KNO)
